Sugar Hill Records

Box Set: Sugar Hill Records: A Retrospective (5 CD set)

With over 25 years of quality music in the can, it's certainly not too soon for Sugar Hill Records to take a look back with their box set Sugar Hill Records: A Retrospective. Founder and label head Barry Poss' love for quality, roots-based music has garnered his label a whole mess of respect (and 12 Grammy Awards), and his impeccable taste continues to add a mark of quality to any band he picks up. As sprawling and diverse as this five-disc collection is, it's pretty cohesive (Poss' good judgment at work). From the plaintive early work of Ricky Skaggs to the charming, shambling rent-party that is the Gourds, Sugar Hill Records: A Retrospective covers a ton of ground, yet it does so within logical (if loosely set) parameters.

Sugar Hill Records was launched by Barry Poss in 1978. While traveling around rural areas in the South with his banjo, engrossing himself in traditional music, Poss became intrigued by the music of the children and grandchildren of the mountain musicians he visited. Those younger generations of musicians were a combination of the old and the new—influenced as much by old-time and bluegrass music as they were rock, country and other newer forms of music. This interesting combination of, and tension between, roots and contemporary music gave further impetus for Poss to start Sugar Hill Records, helping to pave the way for a neo-traditional movement in Nashville/Country Music.
